3-5 Grade Multiplication and Fractions

We discussed the need for the number talks to develop fluency in students.  The
students have not been taught the strategies for learning their facts and computation.
50 Fact Times Drill - Students do not worry about how many, but practice using the strategies to complete this timed drill.  There are one minute and three minute sections on this drill.  One minute must follow down the columns sequentially with no skipping.  Then students switch to a different color pen or pencil.  They now have 3 minutes to hop around and use their strategies to aswers problems.
Times Table - is a Excel workbook with different sheets to help students learn the strategies for multiplication.  One is to fill in the multiplication table.  This is to be used with the Strategies sheet. Students record the strategies and how many facts that relates to.  This
activity is to show students that there are not 169 facts to memorize, but much less when we learn out strategies. One sheet has different sets of times tables that students have to fill in using their strategies.
Multiplication strings will help build fluency and use strategies of  doubles and making tens to help build fluency.  The visuals of arrays, area model, and dots build understanding.

Fractions - the concepts of fractions develops from understanding what a fraction is, fractions as numbers that represent quantity and can be placed on a number line. Unit fractions are an important concept.  Just like counting with units of 1, we can count with unit fractions, i.e. 1/2, 2/2, 3/2 etc. Concepts move to equivalent fractions. For 4th grade, students would learn to add and subtract like fractions, and 5th grade moves to fractions with different denominators.  We showed the concepts with a number line through using composing and decomposing of numbers as we have in whole number operations, plus the traditional algorithm.

We discussed using more performance tasks aligned to the common core.  I have pulled together the different tasks that have been posted on the www.illustrativemathematics.org website.  These are actual aligned tasks to the Common Core and includes commentaries and solutions.
Kindergarten Illustrative Mathematics Tasks
1st Grade Illustrative Mathematics Tasks
2nd Grade Illustrative Mathematics Tasks
In addition, for 2nd grade, go to www.insidemathematics.org to find more performance tasks.

Also we discussed using an activity showing multiple representations of numbers with base-ten blocks.  2nd grade has a sheet and 1st grade has a sheet.  Either can be adapted to meet the needs of your classes.
