Games Handout - Games are a good way to have student practice fluency.  However, teachers and interventionists need to choose appropriate games for the goals and adapt to the students needs.  In addition, games should focus on the strategies.

Summer 2012 - Develop a Student Discourse Plan to start the year!  The following two documents can help plan the year.  It is important to set the tone of classroom discussion within the first two weeks of class.  Then continue to review these procedures as needed.
  1. Transition to Math Practices - This document is a guide to help build student discourse in the classroom.  This will ensure integrating the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practices.
  2. How to Get Students Talking by Lisa De Garcia shows how to plan for the year and provides great strategies!
  3. Communication Speaks, Teaching Children Mathematics by Robin Kinman is a great article that provides practical easy advice for teachers. The article is published by NCTM and can also be found on their website if you currently belong.
  4. Middle Level Student Math Talks from San Diego Unified School District can be used in both Middle School and High SchoolSeconary Level Student Math Talks.
